Leeds born Oli McBurnie does United big favour after Stoke City defeat

Leeds United suffered a setback yesterday as they lost 2-1 to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. The Potters were brilliant on the counter-attack, giving them the win against a Leeds side who ended the game with 10 men after Pontus Jansson saw red.

With Norwich City winning on Friday, it was a poor weekend for Leeds. However, with the top two going up and Leeds fans simply desperate for promotion, the more important result was that of Sheffield United.

Thankfully, for Leeds, their Yorkshire rivals also tasted defeat. It seems that you can take the boy out of Leeds, but not the Leeds out of the boy as Oli McBurnie scored the only goal in a Swansea City victory over the Blades.

McBurnie, born in Leeds, spent several years on the books at Elland Road before being released at 14 and joining Bradford City. From there, he has gone on leaps and bounds.

In the summer, with his contract at Swansea coming to an end, Leeds were heavily linked with the player. With his former Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom also present, it looked a very likely deal. Of course, the former Tykes man was given the boot in June and Marcelo Bielsa replaced him.

As reported by Wales Online, it was a relief when he signed a new deal at the Liberty Stadium as Leeds and Rangers were both lurking.

However, the Leeds-born striker certainly did his schoolboy team a favour yesterday evening as the Whites maintain a four-point gap from the automatic promotion spots and the playoffs.
