Leeds United and Norwich City are reportedly doing battle for Wolfsburg wonderkid Elvis Rexhbecaj ahead of the summer transfer window – and he would be an unbelievable signing for either side.
German newspaper Bild have claimed that 21-year-old midfielder Rexhbecaj is being tracked by Leeds, regardless of what division Marcelo Bielsa’s side finish in come the end of the season.
The Wolfsburg academy product broke into the senior side last season, but he has featured on a much more regular basis this time around. Clocking up 22 Bundesliga appearances, Rexhbecaj even scored against Schalke.
The report states that the midfielder is desperate to remain with the top-tier German club, who have performed much better this season and are only two points off the top six. Last season, they had to play a relegation play-off.
Rexhbecaj has helped that, starting 11 of his 22 Bundesliga appearances this season. Despite his increasing importance to Wolfsburg, the German club are said to be willing to sell.
That is because his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2020. A figure of £7million is said to be enough to land his signature, and Leeds simply have to do all they can to beat Norwich and convince him to head for Yorkshire.
Rexhbecaj’s best attributes are his ability to control the tempo of play at the base of the midfield. Short and long passing are more than in his locker, but also his football intelligence allows him to intercept and tackle.
That suggests he is not cover for the likes of Tyler Roberts, Matuesz Klich or Pablo Hernandez in attacking midfield, but he is more suited to rivalling Kalvin Phillips in between the midfield and defence.
Just 21 years of age, Rexhbecaj shows the maturity of a player that you would expect has been playing top-tier football for years. £7million is a bargain, and Leeds cannot pass up such an opportunity.
