Helder Costa is one of several key individuals that helped Leeds United achieve promotion from the Championship last season as title-winners and it will be no surprise to see him play a big role once again during next season’s Premier League campaign.
The Portuguese winger was a mainstay in the Whites XI during a season-long loan at Elland Road from Wolverhampton Wanderers, which has now become a permanent deal worth £15million (Leeds Live).
He finished the season with five goals and eight assists across all competitions for the Yorkshire club, but more than that it was his incredible work-rate and movement in the final third that made him a great fit for manager Marcelo Bielsa.
The 26-year-old certainly seemed to grow into the role the longer the season progressed and mainly operated from the right flank to allow him to cut inside on his favoured left foot.
Costa is in a position where more than most he’s got a real point to prove in the Premier League, as his one previous crack at the English top-flight ended poorly.
Despite starting his career in England in brilliant fashion with Wolves back in 2016, a serious ankle problem derailed his progress and his form started to dip at Molineux when they earned Championship promotion.
The speed machine spent the 2018/19 season with Wolves in the Premier League and ended up losing his spot in the second half of the year due to his lack of attacking output.
He managed just one goal in his 25 league appearances and had to watch his teammates impress in the Premier League, which is why he ended up moving to Elland Road at the beginning of last season.
Costa’s career has certainly been reignited in Yorkshire and he’s now fully equipped under manager Bielsa to show why he’s got the quality to be a Premier League performer, as there is no doubt offensive ability and he can really hurt defenders one-on-one.
He can bury the demon of his first Premier League season by helping Leeds settle quickly in England’s main division and should show his improvement under Bielsa.
