Leeds and Wigan fans react on Twitter to Joe Gelhardt gesture

Leeds United may be yet to see Joe Gelhardt kick a ball for the club, but it appears that the summer signing has already earned the respect of many with a remarkable gesture.

It has been an awful time for Wigan Athletic supporters in recent months. And the Latics’ plight off the pitch has opened the door for clubs to bid for some of their better players on it.

Leeds managed to win the race to sign Gelhardt. The Yorkshire Evening Post reported earlier this month that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had paid £1 million for the youngster, who signed a four-year deal at Elland Road.

But Gelhardt has already shown that he is not going to forget about his former club by any means now that he has moved on.

Wigan Athletic’s Supporters Club confirmed on Twitter on Friday night that Gelhardt had made a £1,000 donation to their drive to help fund the club as they search for a new owner.

It is a fantastic gesture from the 18-year-old. And, unsurprisingly, it has not escaped the attention of both the Wigan and Leeds supporters on social media.

Many have lauded Gelhardt. Obviously, the Wigan supporters have been touched by the donation. But there have also been plenty of Leeds fans who have expressed their admiration for their new signing.

Whites supporters know better than most what Wigan fans will be going through right now. And while there unfortunately appears to be a long way to go, Gelhardt’s gesture has given both sets of fans a reason to smile.

Here is how some of the Leeds and Wigan supporters reacted to the donation…
