The Sun has suggested that James McCarthy is keen to sign a new contract with Crystal Palace – in news that may come as a disappointment to the likes of Leeds United and West Ham United.
McCarthy enjoyed an encouraging first season at Selhurst Park. He did manage to make 33 appearances in the Premier League. However, he only made 16 league starts.
Nevertheless, a number of top flight sides are reportedly keen on the 29-year-old this summer. 90 Min recently reported that Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa are all interested on the Republic of Ireland international.
However, it appears that McCarthy – who earns £50,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is not expecting to move during this window.
The Sun reports that the former Everton man wants to extend his contract with the Eagles. And it is suggested that the club have begun talks about fresh terms.
TBR View: McCarthy a talent, but plenty of Leeds, West Ham fans may not be disappointed by his stance
McCarthy has been an impressive performer in the Premier League for a number of years. He has made over 250 appearances in the top flight during his career. And at 29, he is potentially some way off being finished.
But his reported stance may not disappoint some Leeds and West Ham fans. He unfortunately had a torrid time with injury during the latter stages of his time with the Toffees.
In fairness to McCarthy, he featured in all but five of Palace’s league games this past season. But he failed to provide a goal or assist in the top flight.
So there may be a number of supporters of the rival clubs who are not too disappointed to hear that he is keen to stay where he is this summer.
