Gaetano Berardi has posted on Instagram after undergoing surgery in Barcelona this week to correct a long-term knee injury he picked up, heartbrakingly after Leeds United gained promotion to the Premier League.
Berardi, 31, played 25 times for Leeds during the 2019-20 campaign as he remained first reserve at centre-back for both Ben White and Liam Cooper. He played a crucial part, on and off the pitch, as Leeds finally gained promotion.
Since joining the club in 2014, he and Cooper remain the club’s longest-serving players and the one-time Switzerland international has been desperate to help return the club to the Premier League ever since he joined six years ago.
So when Leeds did gain promotion, Berardi was evidently delighted. However, that delight was immediately overshadowed by heartbreak – as he picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Derby.
Not only that, but Berardi has now seemingly left Leeds United. His contract ended in June and while he agreed to remain with the club until the end of the season – it remains unclear if he has left, or will sign a new deal at Elland Road.
The ex-Sampdoria posted a two-word message on Instagram and a picture of himself with strapping from hip to ankle – after going under the knife in Spain. White, who suggested he would not re-sign for Leeds on Instagram, reacted with a heart emoji.
Kalvin Phillips and Illan Meslier also responded.
