Celtic’s academy is alive and well with the likes of James Forrest, Callum McGregor and Mikey Johnston all thriving in the first-team. There is a route to the first-team if the youngsters are good enough.
Neil Lennon will be keeping his tabs on a number of the younger players in Celtic’s squad. Here are three Bhoys who could use 2019/20 as their breakthrough season at Celtic.
Celtic signed Jonathan Afolabi from Southampton in the summer. And while he is considered one for the future, he might just get a few first-team chances. If he impresses for the reserves, Afolabi will be eyeing a first-team spot.
The 19-year-old striker led the line for Southampton’s academy last season and he can also play out wide. If there is an injury to Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths or Vakoun Issouf Bayo, Afolabi might be next in line.
Celtic landed Lee O’Connor from Manchester United on deadline day and he could be an exciting capture. The Republic of Ireland U21 captain can play anywhere across the back four or as a holding midfielder.
The 19-year-old will provide strong cover in all of those positions. Celtic’s defence has been chopping and changing due to injuries so Neil Lennon will be relieved to have a versatile option now.
Armstrong Okoflex is considered to be one of Celtic’s best young players. The versatile forward has been scoring for fun at reserve level and could step up at some point this season.
The 17-year-old is still very raw but Lennon might throw him in at the deep end to see just how good he is. If this comes off, it could be a masterstroke.
