Lee Dixon compares Manchester City midfielder to David Beckham

Lee Dixon has pinpointed exactly why Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez is so difficult to defend against during Amazon Prime’s coverage of their 3-1 win over Everton – comparing him to Manchester United icon David Beckham.

Mahrez, 29, returned to the starting line-up on Wednesday night – just his fourth start in Manchester City’s last eight Premier League games – as City edged past Everton despite going into half-time at 1-1.

Phil Foden’s deflected effort was cancelled out by Richarlison, but second-half efforts from Mahrez and Bernardo Silva secured another win for Pep Guardiola’s men. Mahrez was excellent, terrorising Everton from the left.

Speaking after the 3-1 win, Dixon explained that Mahrez’s ability to cross the ball – but also dribble past a player makes it near impossible for a defender to defend against him, stating Beckham was one of the best at doing it.

“He moves it really quickly and that means the defender is always playing catch up,” Dixon says. “He can cross it early, he doesn’t have to beat you every time. Wingers that want to beat you every time are the best to defend against.

“Beckham was the best at it – gets a yard, whips it in,” Dixon continued. “Then he tries to take you on, then he gets a yard and whips it in. You can’t get anywhere near him, he’s very similar [to Beckham].”

TBR’s view – Mahrez performance highlights City strength in depth

He was excellent from start to finish. The Algeria international proved far too hot to handle for Everton, even despite Carlo Ancelotti using Ben Godfrey at left-back and Lucas Digne on the left side of their midfield.

Given that Mahrez is not a player that starts every match, it shows just how much quality City have in their squad. For a player to produce that level of quality, even though he is not a regular, is unbelievable. It is City’s title to lose.
