Former Arsenal favourite Lee Dixon has explained on Twitter that Mikel Arteta was right to drop Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for yesterday’s North London derby.

The Arsenal captain was a surprise absentee when the Gunners team was revealed, with the club citing ‘disciplinary reasons’ for him being dropped to the bench.

Aubameyang stayed among the substitutes as Arsenal secured a stunning 2-1 victory over their rivals. Martin Odegaard and Alexandre Lacazette scoring after Erik Lamela’s opening goal.

Dixon was a quality defender for the Gunners during his time as a player and he took to Twitter to offer his opinion on the situation after the fine victory.

With Aubamyeang still being named on the bench it suggests that this was just a minor blemish in the relationship between the striker and Arteta.

Clearly, the Spaniard felt that what he’d done was severe enough to drop him to the bench and luckily his decision hasn’t backfired.

Aubameyang has found the met 14 times this season, despite a relatively slow start to the campaign. Nine of his strikes have come in the Premier League.

Yesterday, however, Arteta chose to leave him out but with Lacazette bagging the winner his decision proved justified.

Arsenal face Olympiacos in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 clash ion midweek, with West Ham to come at the weekend.

Aubameyang faces an anxious wait to see if he will be involved in the pair of massive fixtures.

The 31-year-old is the club’s highest earner and it does seem unlikely that he will be dropped for too long.
