Lee Bowyer has told London News Online that Joe Aribo is making the wrong decision for his career by joining Rangers, as the Charlton Athletic midfielder reportedly nears a move to Ibrox.
The 22-year-old is closing in on a move to Rangers this summer, with his contract at Charlton set to expire. The attacking midfielder was crucial to Bowyer’s side last season, helping the Addicks gain promotion.
Aribo scored 10 goals for Charlton last season as well as laying on five assists, but opted against signing a new deal with the lure of Premier League and Championship clubs tempting him to look elsewhere.
Celtic were also linked and Steven Gerrard has since claimed that the Hoops made an offer for Aribo, but that the midfielder chose to join Rangers over Neil Lennon’s side. But Bowyer believes it is the wrong move for Aribo.
“I worked so hard to get him to this situation he is in now,” Bowyer said about Aribo, who the Daily Record claim ha a medical on Monday. “It is about progression for him.
“So it’s a shame if he gets pushed to somewhere where it is not going to benefit him in his football career. If he goes to Rangers that is not the right place for him to go for his football career.
“You have got Rangers and Celtic who are massive clubs. And I get that Steven Gerrard was a great player, so that’s an attraction. Those two things are the attraction – but not everything else. It doesn’t make sense.”
TBR’s view – Bowyer is missing the point
Rangers play an enormous amount of matches throughout the entire course of the campaign. Indeed, the Gers played 60 matches in all competitions, meaning there is plenty of rotation.
Injuries and suspensions are constant. Aribo has been brought to what is already a big squad at Rangers, and the chances are that he will act as cover to the likes of Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack.
But there will be plenty of chances for Aribo. The Europa League, two domestic cups and the league are all exhausting competitions. Bowyer is wrong, Aribo will get plenty of chances and further his development.
