Ledley King has posted a 10-word Twitter verdict after Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the sale of Toby Alderweireld to Qatari club Al-Duhail. There have been conflicting reports regarding the price in which Spurs have sold him for. But King has paid tribute to Alderweireld, after his Tottenham exit.
Alderweireld, 31, leaves Spurs after clocking up 236 appearances in six seasons. The 113-time Belgian was part of the golden Tottenham era under Mauricio Pochettino – being named the club’s Player of the Season in 2015-16. He was crucial in their run to the Champions League final in 2019.
But over the last season or two, Alderweireld’s form has dipped. Last season, he failed to plug the gap at the back. Alongside Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez, all three struggled and it is clearly an area Fabio Paratici is looking to change. He posted on Instagram in the red of Al-Duhail.
What has King said about Alderweireld leaving Tottenham?
It leaves Tottenham with a sizeable hole at the back. Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon are still young, while Sanchez continues to be linked with the exit door. Dier was well below par last season. Tottenham need one or two centre-backs in the coming months – and Cristian Romero is said to be close.
But Alderweireld’s exit is a sad one. It is another member of Pochettino’s core that has now departed, days after Erik Lamela left the club to join Sevilla in a deal bringing Bryan Gil the other way. Tottenham legend King posted a 10-word verdict on Twitter, following the exit of Alderweireld.
