Tottenham legend Ledley King insists that promising youngster Japhet Tanganga is doing a brilliant job following his promotion to the first-team.
The 20-year-old made his senior debut in the Premier League against Liverpool at the weekend, before following that up in midweek for an FA Cup third round replay against Middlesbrough.
Jose Mourinho has shown faith in the academy graduate and he’s impressed during the two games, where he’s completed the full 90 minutes in both.
Tanganga is a centre-back by trade that has impressed at youth level, but has also shown great versatility by slotting in at right-back for Spurs.
The English powerhouse has great strength and speed in his game, which is why he’s had no trouble adjusting to the step up.
King has revealed that he’s had personal chats with the defender and is delighted to see him performing well in Mourinho’s side.
“I’ve seen Japhet he played a couple of games in pre-season under Pochettino done really well and I’ve had my eye on him for a little while now,” King told talkSPORT2.
“I’ve been able to have a few conversations with him actually sit down to show him a few bits and pieces. He’s a kid that is hungry to play, enjoys defending which is great.
“His main position is centre-back and he’s slotted in at right-back brilliantly. I think it’s always important for young players to have another position they can play and that’s what has enabled him to get to the team early. At the moment he is doing brilliantly, he is a lad that will continue to get his head down and work hard, but really pleased for him.”
Tanganga will be extremely motivated to keep his spot in the team moving forward and the hard work really starts now for him.
He has to battle alongside some experienced proven defenderd for his spot in the squad, but the early signs are extremely positive and he doesn’t look out of place.
Spurs are still competing on three different fronts this season, as they are in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, fourth round of the FA Cup, plus they are trying to bridge a nine-point cushion to the top four spots in the Premier League.
There should be plenty of chances for Tanganga to continue his development in the first-team and fans are desperate to see more.
