It was another strange twist in this incredible window, during the weekend. Reports suggest that Tottenham have had a bid accepted for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, with a club-record £60million on the table. Now, Martinez has posted on Instagram, amid a potential move to Tottenham.
Still only 23, Martinez is regarded as one of the best young strikers in European football. Last season, in the shadow of Romelu Lukaku, the forward had a hand in 30 goals in 48 games for Inter. Scoring 19, he created 11. He also has 14 goals in 28 Argentina caps. A real talent.
It comes as a bit of a surprise, and a potential coup, that Tottenham could be about to sign Martinez. The Times claim that Tottenham have had a bid of £60million accepted for Martinez, with Arsenal also linked. With Inter needing some cash, Martinez could be sacrificed this summer.
Amid the reports, Martinez returned to action on Sunday after competing at Copa America. The striker scored three goals in six games as Argentina won the tournament. He played 80 minutes of a 2-0 win over Parma – posting a message on Instagram. His message says: “Happy to be back, Forza Inter.”
Could Tottenham really sign Martinez – amid his Instagram post?
The chances are slim. Clearly, Tottenham have the financial power to sign Martinez and Fabio Paratici is one of the best sporting directors around. But given Spurs are not in the Champions League and Inter are – while Inter have just won the title and Spurs finished seventh, it looks unlikely.
Martinez is also clearly happy to be at Inter. The Argentine’s post on Instagram is proof of that, literally stating he is “happy” to be back. Tottenham will have to sell Martinez the dream. Paratici certainly has his work cut out in getting Martinez – but reports continue to gain traction.
