A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been commenting on Twitter regarding the prospect of reported Spurs long-time target Gareth Bale being offloaded by Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to a report in Marca.

Bale, who left Spurs for the Bernabeu in a then world record £85million fee in 2013 (BBC Sport), has found himself surplus to requirements at the Spanish capital club.

This season, the Wales international has made just 11 starts in La Liga, and has netted just three goals in all competitions this season, with injuries and loss of form playing their part.

Marca claims that Real head coach Zinedine Zidane doesn’t want Bale in his squad and that Los Blancos are potentially willing to waive his transfer fee in order to get him off the wage bill.

Earning a reported £650,000-a-week, few clubs worldwide can afford his wages, with a prospective move to Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning falling through last summer.

However, Tottenham have long been linked with a player who was on their books between 2007 and 2013, lighting up White Hart Lane from 2009 onwards, and could be interested in getting him back.

That said, although Bale is a talented player with a glittering CV, his age, injury record and potential wage expectations may not make him the best fit for Spurs at this moment in time.

Some fans seem to think the same and have been having their say on social media:
