The last five Everton transfers in January show why the Toffees are hesitant to do business in the window. It’ll take something great to inspire them.
The January window hasn’t been good to Everton with transfers in recent times. It explains quite well why the Toffees are hesitant to sign players now and they haven’t used the opportunity for two years.

Cenk Tosun was the last player to arrive. He joined under Sam Allardyce to add physicality and goals up top but it hasn’t panned out that way. 50 games and two-and-a-half years later, Tosun has ten goals.
But the Turkish forward is merely the latest. The four players before him read: Theo Walcott, Eliaquim Mangala, Morgan Schneiderlin and Ademola Lookman.
None of them really came close to realising expectations. Walcott arrived as an England international hoping to rebuild his career but never managed more than six goals in a campaign.
Mangala was just a disaster, of course, with Schneiderlin looked good on occasion but never justified a £25m pricetag. Then there’s Lookman – brought in as a youth player with big potential but hasn’t really delivered on the £11m spent.
So Everton will enter the window in a little over a month in strange position. The summer proved that they can attract quality players under Carlo Ancelotti and they may want to try that again. They’ve got a world-class manager and they look like a club on the up – take advantage of that while you can.
But on the other hand, they’ve got a poor history when it comes to January business.
Reportedly, they might try and land Isco in this window. That’s an interesting one in of itself. He’s a player with a huge reputation and immense talent, someone they should try and land.
But Isco also needs to rebuild his standing and get back to his best. There’s certainly potential for him to be no.6 on this list of failed arrivals, then.
Although, you’ve got to break the ‘curse’ sometime. They can’t go forever without a mid-season signing, even with a terrible record there.
