West Ham United were in the hunt for Genoa striker Krzysztof Piatek this month. The Poland international had been in fine form in Serie A and was on the radar of several clubs. As reported by the Daily Mail, West Ham had two bids rejected for the player and were very keen on his signature.

In the end, he headed to AC Milan. The Rossoneri paid a fee in the region of £31 million for the player, according to Sky Sports.

It seems, however, that West Ham did get a chance to offer the player a deal. He confirmed to the Polish press that West Ham made a comparable offer to AC Milan, but that he wished to play for a bigger club and moved to the San Siro.

“I was determined about Milan. With all due respect to West Ham, but I came to a much bigger club. Money can be at a similar level, but at this stage of my career it’s not the most important for me. Here I have the chance to play in the Champions League.”

West Ham have moved on, targeting Maxi Gomez of Celta Vigo. However, last night was proof of what Piatek could have brought to the London Stadium.

Milan’s new striker had a sensational full debut as they defeated Napoli 2-0 in the Coppa Italia. He coolly slotted home his first goal before smashing home his second in the 27th minute. The game ended 2-0 and Piatek is already a hero among the AC Milan fans, who consider him a potential next Andriy Shevchenko type.

West Ham nearly signed him once as well before the Ukrainian went on to have a dominant European scoring record. The Hammers might have missed out in yet another gem here.
