Kris Commons rubbishes Rangers ‘Invincibles’ claim following Scottish Cup exit

Former Celtic player Kris Commons has lambasted Rangers following their exit from the Scottish Cup last night in dramatic style by St Johnstone.

Writing in The Daily Mail via The Glasgow Times, the ex-Scotland international criticised Steven Gerrard’s side after the newly-crowned Scottish champions were dumped out of the Scottish Cup and ended their chances of securing a first domestic double in over a decade, with Rangers crashing out on penalties after conceding a 120th-minute equaliser through St Johnstone’s goalkeeper.

Rangers are still on for an unbeaten league campaign with three games of the season left to play, with Celtic the last team to go Invincible in the Scottish Premiership under Brenden Rodgers in 2016/17, where the Hoops also claimed a domestic treble, and for this, Commons believes the Gers can’t be considered worthy holders of the prestigious title.

Commons said: “For me, these results should shatter any possibility of this Rangers team being referred to as ‘Invincibles’ in years to come. Even if they do go on to finish the league season unbeaten, I don’t see how you can mention them in the same breath as Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic team of 2016-17.”

The former midfielder added: “You could say that about Rodgers’ Celtic team; you can’t say it about Gerrard’s Rangers. The Ibrox side went into both of those matches against St Johnstone and St Mirren knowing that Celtic were already out of the equation.”

TBR View: Rangers threw away shot at greatness, but Invincible achievement will still be momentous

In a league where Celtic have dominated and rewritten every record in the book over the past decade, it is easy to dismiss that Rangers winning ‘just’ the Scottish Premiership can be seen as an underachievement from some supporters, but if Gerrard can finish the season without a single league defeat, it will still be a massive accomplishment for the club.

Only a handful of clubs have ever gone an entire season undefeated, even fewer with more than 30 games to play as well as balancing domestic and continental competitions, and if Rangers can weather the storm in their final three games, this side will go down in history as one of the greatest in the history of Scottish football, even with just one sole trophy to show for it.
