Kris Commons has told Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage of Rangers’s win over Celtic (broadcast on 29/12; 14:25) that Borna Barisic was superb at Parkhead as Steven Gerrard’s side claimed a famous win.
Rangers go into the winter break two points off top spot with a game in hand after a 2-1 victory against the Hoops.
Gerrard’s men were arguably much better than their opponents. But, unlike the League Cup final, they were able to find a way past Fraser Forster in the Celtic goal.
Ryan Kent and Nikola Katic both found the back of the net. And they were both set up by Barisic, with the Croatian sliding a great ball into Kent’s path before finding Katic with an inviting corner in the second-half.
And after the full-time whistle, Commons suggested that Barisic was the standout performer in a stunning Rangers display.
“Rangers wanted this more,” he told Sky Sports. “But Barisic for me, what a player he is. I think it was Andy Walker who said on commentary possibly the best left-back in the Premiership at the minute. Without a question, superb.”
Barisic has been a different player this season. It would not have been a surprise if the Gers sold the left-back in the summer. And it would not have been a decision that would have been criticised by the fans.
But Barisic has stayed and been outstanding throughout the campaign. He certainly has to be considered the country’s best left-back right now.
In truth, there are arguably not many players from any position who have had a better few months than Barisic.
