Kris Boyd said Celtic player was finished in October, he could not have been more wrong

Leigh Griffiths has returned to Neil Lennon’s side since the winter break in stunning form, scoring an excellent hat-trick against St. Mirren before Scottish football was suspended – and the Celtic star has proved Kris Boyd completely wrong.

Griffiths, 29, only managed 20 appearances last season as he took time out from football. This season, a number of niggling injuries and issues with fitness saw him fail to break into the starting eleven on a regular basis.

Indeed, Griffiths started only six of his 18 appearances up until the new year – scoring only three times. It saw former Rangers striker Boyd claim in his Scottish Sun column that he believed Griffiths’ days at Celtic were over.

“As for Leigh Griffiths? I don’t know what’s going on there,” Boyd said back in October. “I wish him the best, but I’m concerned if we’re ever going to see him consistently at his best again. I can’t help but consider his Parkhead days are numbered.”

However, since the turn of the year, Griffiths has starred for Celtic – proving Boyd got it all wrong. He has started 11 of his 13 Celtic appearances in 2020, scoring an excellent eight goals and even showing a creative edge with three assists.

Griffiths seems to have rid himself of the shackles that were previously holding him back, both off the field and in terms of his fitness. His resurgence has seen Lennon revert to a three-man defence, in order to start him up front with Odsonne Edouard.

The Covid-19 pandemic came at the worst possible time for Griffiths, who scored a hat-trick in his last appearance for Celtic. However, he has certainly got his Hoops spell back on track, forcing Boyd to eat his own words.
