Kris Boyd offers theory behind Rangers’ stunning Premiership start

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes his former club’s brilliant start to 2020/21 is down to the confidence instilled in the players by manager Steven Gerrard.

The Light Blues are still unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership, winning 12 and drawing two of their 14 games so far.

At present, they sit top on 38 points – nine clear of bitter rivals Celtic who do have a couple of games in hand where they could reduce the gap.

It’s been a near-perfect opening to the new season, with Rangers scoring goals at one end and keeping opponents out at the other.

Yesterday’s 8-0 destruction of Hamilton was so impressive, and Boyd believes his former club are extremely well placed right now.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s been a totally different team, as Steven Gerrard has so much confidence in his players. He can look around at the bench and he’s got international players and everyone seems to be playing with a smile on their face.

“Defensively, they’re aggressive from the front playing high up the pitch. A lot of the goals against Hamilton were caused by pressing.

“Successful teams have to do the other side of the game by working hard and forcing their opponents into mistakes, and they’ve been excellent so far this season.”

Rangers must ride the wave of confidence

The perfect balance has been struck by Rangers so far this season.

Gerrard’s side are very strong in both defence and attack, and they must keep the momentum going for as long as they can.

Confidence is clearly surging, and it’s likely to keep spreading through the squad the longer they maintain a healthy lead over Celtic.
