Kris Boyd hammers Celtic summer signing, has massive criticism of Celtic board

Kris Boyd has told the Sky Sports Scottish Football podcast that Celtic’s transfer policy was not good enough in the summer, labelling striker Albian Ajeti – who joined the club from West Ham United – a “flop”.

Celtic spent a considerable amount of money to bring in Ajeti, Vasilis Barkas and David Turnbull on permanent deals – costing more than £10million. Loan deals for Mo Elyounoussi, Shane Duffy and Diego Laxalt are also likely to have cost a lot of money.

Switzerland international Ajeti joined Celtic after struggling at West Ham, where he failed to score in 12 appearances. Celtic had hoped he would rediscover his Basel form – but the striker has since managed just five goals in 18 matches for the Hoops.

Ex-Rangers striker Boyd has hammered the Celtic transfer policy and those above Neil Lennon for their work in the summer – while also battering striker Ajeti for his start to life at Parkhead, amid enormous pressure on Lennon.

“Ajeti, for £5million, has been a major flop,” Boyd said. “At that price, you’re looking for more. Lennon is getting the brunt but there are people in the building – questions need to be asked because the signing policy has been not good enough.”

TBR’s view – Ajeti should be playing a lot better

At Basel, Ajeti’s stunning form saw him score goals in the Champions League and break into Switzerland’s national team. He scored 43 goals in 96 outings for the Swiss side – starting only 67 of those. He also laid on 21 assists.

That kind of form means Ajeti should be scoring goals a lot more than he has done. Yes, his form has coincided with Celtic struggling in the final third, but Ajeti needs to be doing more. A “flop” after 18 games? Slightly harsh from Boyd.
