Ex-Rangers attacker Kris Boyd believes that the club’s current centre-forward Jermain Defoe has been in excellent form so far this season.
Gers manager Steven Gerrard is very fortunate to have two top-class strikers in his squad and he’s rotated them so far during a busy campaign.
Alfredo Morelos now have nine goals across all competitions this campaign, after he netted two more on Thursday night in a Europa League qualifier against FC Midtjylland.
The Light Blues are through to the fourth round of Europa League qualifying, as they beat Midtjylland 7-3 on aggregate over two legs.
As well as prolific attacker Morelos, the Scottish giants also have the experience of Defoe up their sleeve.
The 36-year-old Englishman now has five goals across all competitions this season in six games, which included a hat-trick last weekend against Hibernian in the league.
Boyd, who was appearing as a pundit on The Debate, has hailed the early-season form of Defoe.
“Jermain Defoe has found his goalscoring boots this season,” he said on Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (10:35pm, 15 August).
“What a start he’s had, he was excellent at the weekend with the perfect hat-trick. Rangers are in a good place.”
Morelos is the first-choice striker for Rangers, but what a reserve option in Defoe to have and there is no doubt he will be giving tips to the 23-year-old.
Defoe joined on an 18-month loan spell back in January and made a decent start in Scotland for someone in the latter stages of his career.
He netted eight times in 20 games across all competitions for the Gers last season, but his numbers have improved this campaign and he looks even more deadly.
Gerrard has the luxury of knowing whichever striker he puts on the pitch they are likely to score and there is a brilliant goalscoring competition ongoing in-between them.
