Kris Boyd has told Sky Sports News (Friday, 10:25am) that he expects Celtic duo Odsonne Edouard and Jozo Simunovic to start on Sunday afternoon, as the Hoops take on Old Firm rivals Rangers at Ibrox.

Celtic’s pursuit of nine in a row has got off to a strong start, winning three out of three and sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with 15 goals scored. But Rangers are expected to give their closest challenge since returning to the top flight.

Following Thursday night’s win over AIK Stockholm, both in-form striker Edouard and Croatian defender Simunovic were doubts for the clash. Edouard came off against Stockholm with a tight hamstring, while Simunovic did not travel.

The Telegraph has claimed that Simunovic could return in time from his knock for Sunday’s clash, and ex-Rangers striker Boyd reckons both Simunovic and Edouard will start for Celtic at Ibrox in a match that could shape the title race at this early stage.

“Odsonne Edouard came off towards the end with what looked like a tight hamstring but he looks like he is going to be alright, and Jozo Simunovic didn’t travel but I full expect him to start at Ibrox,” Boyd said.

TBR’s view – Having Simunovic is helpful, but Edouard is crucial

Nir Bitton proved on Thursday evening that he is more than capable of playing in the heart of Lennon’s defence, while Celtic also boast Kris Ajer and Christopher Jullien – with new signing Mortiz Bauer able to make his debut at right-back.

Having Simunovic gives Lennon options and indeed, if the Croat colossus is fit, he is expected to replace Lennon alongside Jullien – while Ajer starts at right-back as Bauer gets up to speed.

However, Celtic need Edouard. The Frenchman is pivotal to the way Celtic play, more than just goals and assists. His hold-up play, ability to drag opponents away, and even his defensive work from set pieces, Edouard is pivotal – more so than Simunovic.
