Kobbie Mainoo remains in limbo at Manchester United.
The England international is yet to make a Premier League start this season as Ruben Amorim prefers to use the likes of Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount in central midfield areas.
Mainoo wanted to leave during the summer transfer window as the 20-year-old watches his career stall.
Despite Amorim being open to a sale, the Red Devils refused to sanction a departure.
Now – however – Kobbie Mainoo might be planning to push for a move even harder after Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly revealed Amorim will be given until 2027 to prove himself at Manchester United.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe declaration has surely worried Kobbie Mainoo
Given the circumstances, the only way we can see the Stockport-born midfielder having a future at Old Trafford would be if Amorim left in the near future.
However, Ratcliffe has just told The Business podcast that he intends to give the man born in Lisbon the entirety of his contract – which runs until July 2027 – to make Manchester United successful.
The 72-year-old said: “Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. Yes (he will get the full three years). That is where I would be. Three years, because football is not overnight.
“It’s three years. You also look at (Mikel) Arteta at Arsenal. He had a miserable time over the first couple of years. We have to be patient. We have a long-term plan. It isn’t a light switch.”
That will be music to the ears of Amorim, but not so much Mainoo – whose only start this season came in that embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
A player of this immense potential cannot afford to wait on the sidelines until July 2027 to see how things pan out at Old Trafford, so Ratcliffe’s comments will surely have the Manchester United No.37 even more eager to leave.
Where Kobbie Mainoo could end up if Manchester United sanction a move
If an exit does happen, Mainoo looks likeliest to join Tottenham at the time of writing.
The Manchester United academy graduate posted a photo of himself back in April wearing a Spurs shirt – the kit from the 1995/96 campaign to be exact – during his childhood, suggesting he was a Tottenham fan growing up.
Thomas Frank also needs more homegrown players at Spurs, and is a coach who welcomes the chance to work with young talent, so N17 looks like a potential destination for Mainoo if Manchester United let him go.
