Klopp wanted to sign Sancho before he joined Borussia Dortmund back in 2017

Jurgen Klopp has said that Liverpool had an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho while he was still at Manchester City, according to the Daily Mirror.

Sancho has of course come along leaps and bounds since signing for the Bundesliga table-toppers on deadline day back in August 2017 and is now one of the world’s hottest young players and an England international.

And Klopp says he knew the potential Sancho had and tried to get him while he was at City – but found English clubs were unwilling to do business with other English clubs.

He said: “We are not blind. We saw him, we liked him and then we think ‘Can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell to other English clubs. I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it.”

Klopp was able to get Dominic Solanke from Chelsea back in 2017, so it is possible for an English club to get a disgruntled English player from a domestic rival.

But Solanke’s plight – never able to get into the Liverpool first team regularly before being sold to Bournemouth last month – underlines the issue that young English players have at top sides in this country.

Sancho would perhaps have struggled to develop in the same way had he gone to Anfield, but imagining him as part of Liverpool’s red-hot frontline is a mouth-watering prospect.
