Liverpool take on Chelsea in this weekend’s League Cup final and their manager, Jurgen Klopp, is under no illusions as to the importance of winning the trophy to ensure his team’s legacy.

Despite winning the Premier League and Champions League in recent seasons, the Reds have struggled to add domestic cups to the cabinet and now have the best chance possible to bring home England’s second most prestigious cup competition.

Liverpool are reaching a key crossroads in terms of their future. Big players like Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are coming towards the latter stages of their contracts, with no new terms agreed as yet. And Klopp, speaking to The Times, admits that his team needs to add trophies to be recognised in the future.

“This team, we all know that at the moment the people are really happy,” Klopp said.

“But in 20 years, if you want to talk about this team, I would not be surprised if people would then say if we don’t win anything more ‘yeah, they were good, but they should have won more’. That’s why we should try now to win a few things. And the next chance, is against Chelsea when it’s really tricky.”

Liverpool haven’t got their hands on the League Cup since 2012 when the beat Cardiff City on penalties.

Winning the big trophies is massive for the Reds. They’ve done superbly well to win the Champions League and also dethrone Man City in English football. But Klopp is right, there has to be some more additions to the cabinet.

This feels like a big weekend for the Reds and if they can get one over on Chelsea, it should help them continue their fine form in the league as well. Days out at Wembley don’t come around all too often and Klopp is clearly desperate for his team to get their hands on the trophy.
