Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has told BT Sport (broadcast on 8/3; 22:30) that he was not happy with the way his side failed to counter-press during the second-leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Inter Milan.

The Reds are through to the quarter-final of the competition. However, Inter gave Klopp’s men something of a scare.

Liverpool took a 2-0 lead into the second-leg after a ruthless showing in Milan last month. And they threatened to kill off the tie before Inter were able to halve the deficit.

However, Lautaro Martinez scored a stunning goal for the visitors, finding the top corner after Joel Matip gave the ball away inside his own half.

Inter’s hopes of a comeback were then dealt a huge blow with Alexis Sanchez receiving a second yellow card almost immediately after the goal.

Liverpool came closer to getting the next goal from there. Mohamed Salah hit the post twice during the second-half. Meanwhile, Luis Diaz was denied by an incredible block from Arturo Vidal right at the end of the contest.

Ultimately, it was job done for Klopp and Liverpool. And afterwards, the boss shared what he was not happy with concerning their performance against the Nerazzurri.

“What I didn’t like was the counter-press was not really there,” he told BT Sport.

“We were around challenges but not in challenges. So for the first 20 minutes, I didn’t think we won one ball back immediately, even when we were there. It gives them the situation they want, they need.”

Klopp can still reflect upon good day for Liverpool despite Inter Milan loss

Liverpool suffered their first defeat since late December on Tuesday. In fact, the result ended a run of 12 wins in a row for the Reds.

Obviously, it is frustrating that they were beaten when some fans may be starting to wonder how many trophies they may end the campaign with.

But Klopp should not mind too much that Liverpool have had something of a warning against Inter. It came on a day when Liverpool ultimately achieved their objective.

They have knocked the Serie A champions out at the last 16 stage. And despite the loss, few will want to be drawn against Klopp and his Liverpool side in the next stage.
