Jurgen Klopp says Roberto Firmino is the 'best offensive defender' he has ever seen

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Brazilian forward, Roberto Firmino, is one of the most intelligent players in his squad, ahead of today’s clash with Manchester United.

The Reds take on United looking to continue their fine form. Key to that form has been Mo Salah, who is the hottest topic in football right now thanks to his explosive start to the season.

However, last weekend’s hammering of Watford showed off other members of this Liverpool squad. None more so, than Roberto Firmino, who netted himself a hat-trick at Vicarage Road.

The Brazilian has been fighting it out with Diogo Jota this season. But he took his chance last weekend, and Klopp, speaking ahead of the big game, believes Firmino is one of his most important players.

“He’s a very important player to us – he’s a connector. He’s the best offensive defender I ever saw in my life, definitely! He’s a ball chaser, defensively incredibly smart with all of the things he’s doing. Technically on the highest level,” Klopp said of the Liverpool number nine.

“He’s able to play in the smallest spaces. Makes incredibly good decisions in the smallest amount of time. And he scores goals as well.”

Firmino signed for Liverpool back in 2015 in a deal worth around £29m.

TBR’s View: Firmino a class act at Liverpool

For all the good work Jota has done since coming in from Wolves, a fully fit and firing Bobby Firmino is irreplaceable for Liverpool.

He just brings so much to the table when he’s on song. Goals, assists, and that workrate that Klopp mentions here. As the Reds boss says, it’s almost like having a defender in the opposition’s final third.

Given the chance today, you can bet Firmino will be doing his utmost to have an impact on the game at both ends.
