Curtis Jones’ brilliant season continued on Monday as he hit a hat-trick for the club’s U23s.

The 19-year-old featured against Sunderland at the Academy in the Premier League Cup, and helped Neil Critchley’s team to a convincing 6-0 win.

Captain Jones bagged thrice in the space of just eight minutes, one an impressive left-footed effort, one a right-footed curler and the final strike a tap-in after good work by Liam Millar.

Those goals were his 17th, 18th and 19th strikes of the season, and there will undoubtedly be some clamour for him to get more minutes for the first-team from here.

Jones has made seven first-team appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s team so far, but there could, and maybe should, be more chances of the horizon.

TBR’s view – Jones deserves more first-team minutes

Liverpool have been so good this term, that it has been very difficult for Klopp to make to many changes to his starting XI.

The Reds’ relentlessness is going to rewarded with a Premier League title – it is simply a question of when, not if.

Hopefully for Jones, it happens as soon as possible. In theory, once the deal has been sealed, the pressure will be totally off for Liverpool and it will give some of the youngsters a chance to impress.

Jones, in particular, deserves to play every game once the title is wrapped up. He has stood out in all of the FA Cup and League Cup games he’s played in.

The temptation will be for Klopp to go full strength every week to maybe try and beat Manchester City’s points total, but Jones shouldn’t be overlooked.

He has genuine potential and could show Klopp he can actually play at Anfield in 2020/21, rather than be one of many who’ll be loaned out.
