Klinsmann gives verdict on Son Heung-min display against Uruguay

Jurgen Klinsmann has told BBC One (broadcast on 24/11; 14:59) that Son Heung-min did not have the same presence he has for Tottenham Hotspur during his World Cup opener against Uruguay on Thursday.

South Korea can be pleased with their point against the two-time winners. It was a frustrating game, with no shots on target coming from either side during the clash.

Of course, many eyes were on Son heading into the game. The forward has not played for Spurs since sustaining a nasty face injury against Marseille in their final Champions League group-stage clash.

Unsurprisingly, he was in the starting lineup against the South Americans, wearing a mask. Unfortunately, it did not prove to be his best day at the office, by any means.

Certainly, Klinsmann thinks he will improve as the tournament goes on after getting through 90 minutes in the stalemate.

“He tried, he tried really hard,” he told BBC One. “We didn’t know with what energy, what confidence he goes into this first World Cup match since his injury. He had a presence but not the presence that we usually see from him at Spurs. So he tried. I think he can only get better.”

It probably will be a big boost for Son to get through the game seemingly unscathed. He must have had concerns about what may happen on such an important stage.

Uruguay were always going to be difficult to beat. They boast a hugely impressive squad. And they have one of the best midfield pairings in the tournament in Federico Valverde and Son’s Spurs teammate Rodrigo Bentancur.

South Korea created chances. However, they were unable to make the most of those opportunities. That will still give them belief ahead of their remaining games.

And after avoiding defeat against Uruguay, they will definitely believe that they can do something special – particularly with Son leading the line.
