Arsenal have officially confirmed the departure of Mohamed Elneny. The Egyptian midfielder has joined Turkish club Besiktas on a season-long loan deal.
It was certainly in Elneny’s best interests to secure a move away from the Emirates Stadium this summer. He clearly isn’t in Unai Emery’s plans. The 27-year-old hasn’t featured for the Gunners this season, and only managed 17 outings in all competitions for the club last season.
For the good of his own career, the 75-cap Egypt international needed to move on to stand a chance of getting regular football elsewhere. He has the ability to be a key player for Besiktas and will be hoping to get back to his best in the Super Lig.
There was no room for him any more in Emery’s squad. The likes of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos are all ahead of him in the pecking order for the north London club. He has made 89 appearances for Arsenal, won an FA Cup and scored twice, but the time to move on has now come.
Whilst this is only a loan, Elneny is unlikely to ever play for the Gunners again.
Following the confirmation of Elneny’s departure, lots of Arsenal fans took to Twitter to react to the news.
