Tottenham Hotspur fell to a humbling 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff.

Spurs headed to the Emirates hoping to leapfrog their North London rivals at the top of the table.

However, Tottenham ended up leaving empty-handed after finishing the game with ten men.

Arsenal opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Thomas Partey’s long-range effort.

Tottenham were then given the chance to equalise from the spot on the half-hour mark.

Gabriel Magalhaes brought Richarlison down, prompting the referee to award Spurs a penalty.

And Harry Kane made no mistake, hammering the ball down the middle for his seventh North London derby goal.

However, Arsenal edged back in front early in the second half, making it 2-1 in the 49th minute.

Hugo Lloris spilled a Bukayo Saka effort, allowing Gabriel Jesus to prod the ball over the line.

Tottenham’s comeback mission then became much harder after the hour.

Emerson Royal‘s sending-off for his wild lunge at Gabriel Martinelli left Spurs with a mountain to climb.

And Arsenal duly made it three in the 67th minute through Granit Xhaka.

He wrong-footed Eric Dier from Gabriel Martinelli’s flick and rifled a low effort beyond Lloris to make it 3-1.

Emerson’s needless, reckless red card likely cost Tottenham the game.

And numerous pundits were not happy with the £62,000-a-week defender’s actions, including talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara.

The Spurs-leaning pundit took to Twitter with a scathing criticism of Emerson and the Spurs team mid-game.

O’Hara then shared his thoughts at full-time, once again singling Emerson out for criticism.

Tottenham will need to go back to the drawing board following another disappointing display.

Although Spurs have a superb team on paper, all too often they’ve not played especially well.

They’ve got away with it a number of times, still claiming wins, but Arsenal had too much for them.

Conte will need to regroup his charges immediately ahead of another huge game in a few days’ time.

Tottenham are next in action on Tuesday when they head to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League.
