Kieron Dyer has suggested that he would rather Newcastle United have signed Southampton striker Danny Ings instead of club-record signing Joelinton from Hoffenheim, when talking to BBC Radio 5 Live – as per the Chronicle.
Joelinton has endured a very difficult campaign at Newcastle since his £40million move to Tyneside, netting just two Premier League goals and only four in total. He has since his lost his place to Dwight Gayle.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool ace and England international Ings has been in stunning form. The Saints ace joined his current side on a permanent £20million (Telegraph) fee last summer after an initial loan spell during 2018-19.
He has scored 21 Premier League goals this season and is second in the race for the golden boot, two behind Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy. Dyer believes Newcastle should have signed Ings instead of Joelinton.

“Danny Ings, for me,” Dyer said, when asked for his signing of the Premier League season. “You just think: ‘What did Newcastle pay for Joelinton?“£40million? Clubs at the bottom, what they don’t have are goalscorers.
“To get Danny Ings for such a steal, who can score you 20 Premier League goals, is an absolute bargain. He is the signing of the season, for me.”
TBR’s view – Hindsight is a wonderful thing
Newcastle decided to sign a young Brazilian that had a hand in 20 goals during 35 games for Hoffenheim – even scoring against Lyon in the Champions League. Able to play out wide or up front, he looked a promising player.
Had Newcastle opted to sign Ings – who had just scored eight goals in 25 games on loan at Southampton – fans would have slammed the club’s recruitment policy and owner. They took a risk, it has backfired.
Joelinton may still come good, while not many could have predicted the riches of form Ings has enjoyed this season. Dyer is right – Newcastle should have signed Ings over Joelinton, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.
