Kieran Trippier’s return is bad news for Tottenham teammate

Tottenham have confirmed that defender Kieran Trippier is back in contention for selection ahead of the home clash against Southampton on Wednesday.

Spurs revealed on their official Twitter account that he will be available to manager Mauricio Pochettino for the next Premier League match.

The 28-year-old will be back to compete with Serge Aurier at right-back following recovery from his groin injury, but the updating must be demoralising for his teammate Kyle Walker-Peters.

Walker-Peters, 21, is in theory the third-choice right-back in the squad and has been on the fringes of the first team as a result.

The England Under-21 international is yet to feature in the Premier League this season despite being on the bench seven times, while his only senior appearance this campaign came in the Carabao Cup.

Many believe that Walker-Peters is the next academy product to become a regular with the seniors and has had a brief taste with 10 appearances.

But his opportunities have been extremely scare this season and it must be even worse when Spurs’ senior duo have both had inconsistent spells.

Aurier does have a rash side to his game that doesn’t make him the most reliable full-back around, while Trippier is yet to consistently hit the heights he set at the World Cup with England.

Walker-Peters will hope he gets a deserved chance during a busy December run-in, but the competition for places doesn’t do him any favours.
