Kieran Trippier lifts lid on surprise form at Tottenham in 2018/19

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier has admitted there are no excuses for his patchy form in 2018/19.

The full-back was routinely criticised by fans and pundits for his level of performance, which came as a surprise following a fantastic showing at the 2018 World Cup with England.

Trippier made 38 appearances for the north Londoners in what turned out to be his final season at the club.

He recently completed a £20 million move to Atletico Madrid (BBC Sport), where he’ll now embark on a new lease of life.

On his final season at Spurs, he said: “There’s no excuse for what happened last season.

“Some things happened – nothing bad, it was just injuries and hearing things like I won’t be there next season in the media.

“It was in the back of my mind: ‘Did they want me?'”

His level at the World Cup was excellent – so for him to have been sold for just £20 million 12 months on really does emphasise his decline.

Judging by his comments, perhaps all the talk in the media played on his mind and he was simply unable to focus on his game.

His move to Atletico could be perfect for him though, with Diego Simeone one of the best defensive coaches currently working in football.

If anybody is going to improve Trippier’s game, it’s the Argentine.
