Atletico Madrid defender and former Spurs man, Kieran Trippier, has fired back at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The England defender has had his say following claims from Klopp that Atletico didn’t play the right sort of football.

Diego Simeone’s men played their usual defensive game and ran out 4-2 winners on aggregate. Despite coming under siege for most of the second leg, Atletico held out and eventually saw off the Reds.

And Trippier believes his team did the right thing over two legs, insisting that getting the win was all that mattered.

“If you go there and go toe-to-toe with Liverpool, you’re going to get beat 6-0. I don’t know what people expect,Trippier told the Mirror.

“You need to go there with a plan and we did. We did have to defend but the most important thing is we got the win”.

Liverpool manager Klopp had slated the Spanish side following the game. The German insisting that Atletico could play ‘proper football’ given their talent.

But Trippier was bullish about his own team and said people, and pundits, need to deal with it.

“You see pundits complaining because we did defend, but did they expect us to go there and play attacking football, especially with Liverpool playing the way that they’re playing at the moment?” he added.

“As I’ve got older it has stopped bothering me. Liverpool didn’t put their chances away and we beat them in both legs. It worked and that’s what football is about.”

This notion that there’s a right or a wrong way to play football is something that needs eradicating from the conversation.

You play football to win, however that might be. Yes, Liverpool dominated at Anfield but they couldn’t score.

Furthermore, Atletico didn’t exactly look troubled for most of the two legs. All in all, Trippier is right to call out Klopp and Liverpool and have his say.

At the end of the day, his team are through to the next round and Liverpool are out. That is, essentially, all that matters.
