Kieran Trippier confesses to his poor Tottenham form

Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has admitted that he could have performed a lot better this season in a brutally honest assessment of his own form.

The 28-year-old went into the campaign fresh off the back of some heroic displays in the World Cup, as he starred in England’s run to the semi-finals.

But the right-back has come back down to reality and his Spurs displays have mainly been below par.

He’s linked up with the national squad for the current international break, but has competition from Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester City’s Kyle Walker for a full-back spot.

Trippier has explained he feels his form has not been at the level he expects this season, but is keen to get back to his best sheepishly.

“I could have done a lot better this season. I’ve picked up some injuries and there are games where I’ve looked back and thought ‘I could have done this better’ but it’s all about learning,” Trippier told talkSPORT.

“I admit I could have done better but I’m here now and I’ve got to try and impress so I can start for England.”

Most Spurs fans would go along with the notion that Trippier has underperformed this season and it’s refreshing to hear a player make public comments acknowledging that.

It seems like he may have lost his starting position in the England XI, but manager Gareth Southgate has remained loyal to him by keeping him in the squad.

The right-back needs to focus on his club form in the remainder of the season and cutting out small defensive errors in his game.

Spurs now find themselves back in a battle to keep their top four position and also have the Champions League quarter-finals with Manchester City ahead of them.

Trippier still has the opportunity to finish the season on a high and recapturing his best form would be a major boost for Spurs.
