A report from French outlet Le 10 Sport during the week claimed that Arsenal were monitoring Moussa Dembele, with Lyon set to demand at least £73 million for the striker.
In truth, that sort of asking price surely makes a move away seem unlikely this summer. But there is no question that he would be a fantastic signing for Mikel Arteta’s men.
Dembele has scored 16 Ligue 1 goals this season. Remarkably, he has scored 72 league goals since the start of the 2015/16 season when he was coming through at Fulham.
And given that Dembele is just 23 still, it is not difficult to see why Arsenal are keen and Lyon are set to demand so much.
But if the Gunners fans needed anymore convincing about the youngster’s ability, perhaps they can take some encouragement from Kieran Tierney’s previous comments about the forward.
The pair played together at Celtic. And in April 2018, the left-back – who signed for Arsenal for £25 million last summer (via Sky Sports) – hinted, in comments reported by the Evening Times, at just how highly he rated the forward.
“He is brilliant, Moussa,” he told the Evening Times.
“I remember one game where I fired a ball up to him and he took it on the chest and made a terrible ball from me look so simple. It actually finished up making me look good.
“Having somebody like that in your team is brilliant.”
Of course, some doubters will point to the quality within the Scottish Premiership as a reason to not get too excited about the links with Dembele – even though he has since impressed in France.
But the list of names who have impressed in the Premier League after arriving from Celtic provides reason for additional optimism.
Dembele may not exactly add his name to that list having left Parkhead for Lyon. But he certainly has the talent to be a major success should he move to England.
