Newcastle United broke their transfer record to sign Miguel Almiron for £20million (BBC) in January, but should consider eclipsing that again in the summer if they truly want to compete in the top half of the Premier League.
According to the Daily Star, manager Rafael Benitez is planning potential summer moves and wants to land a defender comfortable of playing at centre-back or wing-back.
The report details that Celtic’s Kieran Tierney fits that criteria, but that he is likely to cost over £20million to prize away from Scotland.
Newcastle should certainly make themselves heard by chasing the 21-year-old and trying to make him the next marquee signing at St James’ Park.
Tierney is one of the outstanding players at Celtic, with experience of winning four league titles and also playing in the Champions League.
The Scotland international is a left-back that is brilliant going froward, but also has the versatility to fill in at centre-back and does that frequently for his country.
Tierney is still aged just 21 and certainly worth the investment, as he’s got all the potential to be a force in the Premier League like his compatriot Andrew Robertson at Liverpool.
Tierney already has six assists under his belt for Celtic this campaign and is extremely mature for his age.
Newcastle manager Benitez needs players that can improve his starting XI instantly and the Celtic full-back would have the edge over Paul Dummett or Matt Ritchie at wing-back.
