The father of Newcastle United midfielder Ki Sung-yueng has claimed the star wants to leave St. James’ Park.

Ki has made just three appearances for the club this season equating to 136 minutes of time on the pitch, and is currently way down in the pecking order.

Steve Bruce has preferred the likes of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and the Longstaff brothers in his engine room thus far.

He does not appear to be in the manager’s long-term plans, and the 30-year-old’s dad has been speaking about the situation.

Kim Young-ok told Korean broadcaster KBS: “He’s trying to find a new home in January next year, and the contract with Newcastle is through May. The key is whether the club will consider freeing them as a free agent.”

Ki joined Newcastle on a free transfer after running down his contract with Swansea City in 2018.

To date, he has made 22 appearances for the club, but it would seem he won’t be adding too many more to that tally.

TBR’s view – Time to move Ki on

The South Korea international has been professional during his time at St. James’, but he hasn’t pulled up any trees and arguably the club would not miss him too much if he departed next month – especially following the emergence of Sean Longstaff.

Letting Ki go would free up £40,000-a-week on the wages (Spotrac), which would be a positive.
