Newcastle United are set to be boosted with the return of midfielder Ki Sung-yueng.

Ki has been out of the picture for the last few weeks on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup.

The ex-Swansea City player is back with the Toon Army first-team now, after Korea were surprisingly knocked out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage.

Ki has actually confirmed that he will no longer represent his country and that his sole focus is Newcastle going forwards.

Frustratingly for Rafa Benitez, Ki came back from the Asian Cup with a hamstring injury.

That forced him to sit out two games at the tournament, but his return to the Newcastle first-team is now imminent.

Ki return huge

Newcastle being able to call on Ki again will be a massive boost to their hopes of staving off relegation.

Before his departure, Ki was one of Newcastle’s most consistent players.

He had made a sluggish start to life at his new club, but quickly became a player of huge importance following Jonjo Shelvey’s injury troubles.

He has been a pillar of calm  alongside the tenacious Mo Diame and has shown he can dictate the pace of games with his passing.

A return against Tottenham Hotspur came too soon for Ki, but there’s a good chance he could be back to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, according to The Chronicle.
