Kevin Kyle suggests Rangers star James Tavernier could join Everton

Kevin Kyle has told Open Goal that Rangers captain James Tavernier would be a good fit for Everton as Irish defender Seamus Coleman continues to get older – and considered a potential January exit for the on-fire skipper.

Tavernier, 29, has been in stunning form this season. Having clocked up 26 appearances in all competitions, Tavernier has scored a whopping 16 goals and created 11 assists. Nine of those goals have been penalties, but even then, his stats are incredible.

Everton have been using centre-back Ben Godfrey on the right side of the defence of late – with Coleman suffering from a thigh injury. Jonjoe Kenny remains at the club, but it is clear that Carlo Ancelotti is preferring his summer signing.

Ex-Rangers man Kyle discussed Tavernier and given his form, he believes there could be suitors in the January window. Asked which Premier League side he would suit, Kyle suggested Tavernier as a replacement of £70,000-a-week (Spotrac) Coleman.

“At Everton, they’ve got Seamus Coleman,” Kyle said. “He is ageing. Can Tavernier replace someone like that? I think so. Maybe questions would be asked about defensively, but this season, Rangers have not had to defend a lot.

“Tavernier leaving Rangers to a West Brom or a Sheffield United, I don’t see the point. In January, if Everton come in with an offer – it needs to be a substantial amount. Individually, he can win 55 and stop 10 in a row – does he want to miss out?”

TBR’s view – Is Tavernier good enough for a club like Everton?

In an attacking sense, Tavernier is excellent. Supporters may be concerned that his form is purely because he has been playing in the lesser Scottish Premiership – but he has also shown his attacking prowess in the Europa League this season.

Two goals and three assists in five Europa League group games is impressive. Defensively, though, is Tavernier good enough for the Premier League? That is certainly a question mark – but with Everton using wing-backs, Tavernier could be ideal.
