Kevin Kyle explains why Eddie Howe would not suit Celtic

Kevin Kyle has told Open Goal that Eddie Howe would struggle at Celtic as Neil Lennon continues to come under mounting pressure as manager – claiming that when he came under pressure at Bournemouth he folded “like a deck of cards”.

Lennon is coming under massive criticism having won just two of Celtic’s last 10 league and cup outings. The Hoops have been knocked out of the Europa League and the Betfred Cup in the past week – losing to Ross County at Parkhead on Sunday.

A number of managers have been linked with the role, after supporters called for his sacking in protests on Sunday evening – following a banner from the Green Brigade earlier last week. Howe is one of those, as he remains without a club.

Howe was sacked by Bournemouth after 458 games as manager across two spells – taking the Cherries from the lowly depths of the Football League to the Premier League. But Kyle thinks he would be eaten alive in the pressure cooker of the Old Firm.

“They’re saying Eddie Howe but let’s get this right. Eddie Howe got Bournemouth relegated. His transfer record is terrible. Under pressure, he would fold like a deck of cards. For me, he doesn’t put shivers down my spine,” Kyle said, on Howe.

TBR’s view – Howe good on paper, but Kyle is bang on

Howe has only ever manager Bournemouth and Burnley – the latter of which saw him last just 87 games before returning to Bournemouth. Yes, an excellent manager but will all due respect to Bournemouth, Celtic are a much bigger club.

A defeat in any match for Celtic is a failure. Two successive losses and the sack is looming for any Hoops gaffer. Would Howe, who has only managed a small Premier League side and Burnley in the Championship, really cope with managing Celtic?

Kyle is bang on. Celtic, right now, need a Celtic-affiliated manager that has a hard personality. Howe is not that man.
