Kevin Campbell has told the Highbury Squad YouTube Channel that he believes Arsenal need to make two signings in order to bring the best out of summer Gunners addition Thomas Partey.
Partey, 27, joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid on deadline day and has impressed in glimpses – his best performance coming in the 1-0 away win over Manchester United. But question marks remain over his best partner.
Mo Elneny has returned to Arsenal and impressed after a loan at Besiktas, while Granit Xhaka continues to be a consistent performer. Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have both left the club on loan.
Campbell believes that Arteta needs to sign a midfielder – an attacking one if Partey is happy to sit, or a defensive one if Partey wants to get forward. Campbell has identified Leicester’s Wilfried Ndidi and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
“Thomas Partey is going to move further forward, go out and get Ndidi to sit in there,” Campbell said. “It just depends, you can either get an Aouar who gets further forward, or you get Ndidi so that Partey can do box-to-box.”
TBR’s view – Aouar or Ndidi?
Partey is more defensive than attacking. Perhaps because of his coaching under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, the Ghanaian is disciplined more than creative. Therefore, Arsenal need to sign an attacking midfielder.
£75,000-a-week Nigeria star (Spotrac) Ndidi is a top player but the Gunners need an Aouar-like playmaker – especially with Mesut Ozil on the sidelines. Joe Willock could play in the role, but it seems Arteta is unconvinced.
