Arsenal are reportedly set to complete the signing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares this month for a loan fee that could rise to as much as £3million – and Kevin Campbell believes the Euro 2016 winner is a “good” signing.

The Evening Standard has claimed that 28-year-old right-back Cedric will initially join Arsenal on loan for an upfront paymant of £1million – but add-ons could take that to £3million. Arsenal will also cover his £65,000-a-week wages.

It is believed that Portugal international Cedric is also expected to sign a permanent deal in the summer, given he has already confirmed he will be leaving Southampton at the end of his current deal – which expires on June 30.

With Arsenal close to announcing their second January signing after agreeing a deal for Pablo Mari, ex-Arsenal man Campbell believes Cedric would be a good signing for the Gunners as Mikel Arteta looks to bring in cover for Hector Bellerin.

TBR’s view – Cedric can rival Bellerin for starting spot

One thing is for sure, the signing of Cedric will mean Arsenal fans never have to endure the nightmare of Ainsley Maitland-Niles at right-back again. Naturally a midfielder, Maitland-Niles has been heavily criticised for his displays in defence.

Cedric has huge experience, winning Euro 2016 with Portugal as well as having 120 Premier League appearances under his belt. During his nine appearances for Inter Milan last season, while on loan, he also impressed. Cedric is a solid signing.
