Kevin Campbell makes comment about Kieran Tierney being a future Arsenal captain
Kevin Campbell has hinted Kieran Tierney is nowhere near ready yet when asked about the prospect of the defender being a future Arsenal captain.
Tierney, 23, is a key Gunners defender and has quickly won over supporters at the Emirates Stadium since he joined from Celtic back in 2019.
The £25million (Sky Sports) left-back is someone that is aggressive in his defending one-on-one, while going forward he’s got relentless energy and great accuracy with his crossing.
But he managed just 25 appearances across all competitions last season, with various different injuries keeping him on the sidelines.
A knee problem saw him miss a month earlier in this season, but he’s played 27 games already this campaign and is settled in the XI.
Campbell feels that Tierney has got a lot more improving to do with hiw own before being tipped as captain material, but doesn’t rule him getting to that position further down the line.
“Kieran Tierney needs to get his own game in order first before he starts thinking of being a captain because there are certain times his positioning isn’t right,” Campbell told Highbury Squad.
“He needs to be consistent with his fitness as well. What’s the point in being captain if he’s going to be on the sidelines. He could be a future captain, yes.”
Tierney looks a natural leader, something he showed at former club Celtic and likewise at Arsenal.
Current Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads by example with his top-class displays.
Meanwhile, Tierney is a fan favourite for his all-action and dedicated performances, as he’s a defender that is willing to put his body on the line on the pitch.
It’s a fair comment that his stop-start time so far at the club hasn’t helped and perhaps he needs more experience, but he’s got the perfect mould to be captain material.
