Kevin Campbell hits out at what Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe posted on Instagram
The 27-year-old joined the Gunners three years ago for a club-record £72 million from Lille (BBC). He was meant to be the guy to take Unai Emery’s Arsenal to the next level, but that didn’t happen.
Just a few months into Pepe’s Gunners career, Emery was shown the door. Mikel Arteta replaced him, and the Arsenal boss made Bukayo Saka his first-choice right-winger. Pepe barely played last season, and as a result, he was expected to leave the club this summer.
However, he posted a message on Instagram this week, suggesting that he’s going to stay: “I worked hard during the summer. Changed lot of things. I’m focused and determined with @arsenal and my teammates. #Ontheroad #premierleague #facup #europaleague #NP19.”

Speaking about Pepe, Campbell said on The Highbury Squad YouTube channel: “I have always said the talent level, it can’t be questioned. We know Pepe is a talented player.
“But you know what is the big problem? How all of a sudden is it that he is different now because he has changed agents? You play for Arsenal. Your attitude and everything should be right from day one. This is the problem. This is why these players have to leave. I think he’s got to go.
“No disrespect, we have seen him influence some games last season and the season before, but the attitude is the one that gets questioned all the time. That’s why Saka has run away with that position.
“Pepe said ‘I will pull my socks up now’. It’s too late. We shouldn’t be hearing that at Arsenal.”
Pepe’s Instagram post really does suggest that he’s staying at Arsenal this season. That really is a surprise as the Ivorian changed agents a few months ago and it seemed certain that he was looking for a way out.
The only explanation, as we see it, is that Pepe didn’t really receive the offers he was hoping for. The likes of Leeds United and Newcastle in the Premier League as well as Sevilla, Lyon and Marseille have all been linked, but no deal seems to have progressed.
That’s probably why Pepe has decided to stay and fancy his chances at Arsenal, and it’s not really an awful idea. The Ivorian will get regular game time in the Europa League, and as he has shown previously, he’s a real threat in that competition.
Moving Pepe on this summer would’ve been ideal for Arsenal considering that he has entered the final two years of his contract. That doesn’t look like it will happen now and Arteta just has to find a way to get the best out of him.
