Kemar Roofe fails to hit the right note on return to West Brom

Leeds United put in their worst performance of the season yesterday, getting outplayed by West Brom at The Hawthorns. The Baggies romped to a 4-1 win against their promotion rivals and Leeds fans were left disappointed with their players.

One man who will be desperately disappointed to have had a poor game is Kemar Roofe. This week Leeds’ top-scorer spoke of his desire to impress at The Hawthorns. With good reason as well. Roofe was once a West Brom talent, but never got a chance to shine at the club.

Roofe, from Walsall, was with West Brom from a young age but spent much of his time with the club out on loan with the likes of Vikingur, Northampton Town, Cheltenham and Colchester. His final loan spell at Oxford stuck and he joined the club permanently. He never played a game for West Brom.

From there, he has moved on to Leeds where he is currently the club’s main goal threat.

So he would have loved to have proved a point yesterday at the home he never got to call home.

“I was at West Brom from the age of six and I left when I was the age of 22-23, so I spent most of my life there.

“I learnt a lot and had most of my football education there, which has played a major part in my career to date.

“It will be good to go back to The Hawthorns, I’ve waited a long time to play there in a professional match and this will be my first time.”

However, it was not his best day at the office. A lame attempt at winning a penalty was his only true impact on the game. West Brom’s attackers meanwhile ran rampant, with Hal Robson-Kanu, Dwight Gayle, Harvey Barnes and, in particular, Jay Rodriguez, tearing Leeds apart.

Roofe, by comparison, did not look up to scratch.

He would have loved to impress at his old club but it did not happen. Hopefully, he can continue his overall form this season to keep Leeds ahead of West Brom in the promotion hunt.
