Kelleher shares what Klopp told him after Liverpool won Carabao Cup
Caoimhin Kelleher has shared with Sky Sports (broadcast on 27/2; 19:35) what Jurgen Klopp told him after the goalkeeper helped Liverpool to Carabao Cup glory on Sunday.
The Reds edged an amazing final at Wembley against Chelsea. Both sides had the ball in the net at various stages. However, the offside flag meant that the contest went all the way to penalties.
Chelsea rolled the dice by bringing Kepa Arrizabalaga on for the spot-kicks. The decision came with Edouard Mendy producing an unbelievable display during the 120 minutes.
However, Kepa ultimately proved to be the villain. The Spaniard did not save one penalty as Liverpool scored all 11 of their attempts.
In fairness, Kelleher did not make one stop in the shootout either. However, Kepa blazed his effort miles over the crossbar to ensure that it was Liverpool who got their hands on the trophy.
The Irishman was absolutely brilliant himself during the game, making some world-class saves. He certainly vindicated Klopp’s decision to play him ahead of Alisson Becker.
Klopp was seen talking to Kelleher after Liverpool won. And the 23-year-old went on to explain what it was Klopp said to him following the victory.
“He just said: ‘well done for scoring the winning penalty’,” he told Sky Sports. “So obviously there’s a wall at Liverpool with all of the goalies who won cups, so he said: ‘now’s your chance, you can go on that’.”
Liverpool will certainly benefit the longer they keep Kelleher in their ranks
It cannot be easy for Kelleher. He is obviously a young goalkeeper at one of the world’s greatest clubs. However, he must also have dreams of being a number one in the near future.
Unfortunately, Alisson is amongst the very best in the world. So he will have to be incredibly patient should he stay at Anfield.
For Liverpool, it would clearly be a huge boost if they can keep Kelleher for a long time. He looks to be a fantastic talent.
And his performance – and ultimately decisive penalty – on Sunday will forever come to mind whenever people talk about Liverpool winning the Carabao Cup in 2022.
