After getting close to the action at the end of the 2018/19 season, Newcastle United starlet Kelland Watts is hoping to break into the senior side during the 2019/20 campaign.
Watts was named on the bench for Newcastle’s final Premier League game of the season. The Magpies travelled down to London to play already-relegated Fulham.
And Watts watched on from the sidelines as an unused substitute as Newcastle won 4-0. Despite not featuring, Watts has now had a flavour of the matchday experience.
The 19-year-old has told Newcastle’s official website that he wants to experience this more often. While remaining grounded and hoping to impress for the U23 side, Watts admitted that he will be aiming to break into the first-team.
He told nufc.co.uk: “Being on the bench in the first-team gives you a little taste. Because of having that, I want more and, to get more, I know I need to work harder and make sure I listen and learn more to people ahead of me as that’s the only way I can get there.”
Boyhood Newcastle fan Watts has played every game for the club’s U23 team this season. But he was part of two near-misses in the cup competitions this season.
The talented teenager has just made the transition from midfielder to centre-back. And he will be hoping to get more first-team opportunities next season for Newcastle.
